Years ago, humans introduced these reptiles into Duskwood to cull the local rat population.
Not alot of them spawn in Duskwood as primaries. Secondary add off a mouse is how i got my rare. Maybe it showed up to defend it's lunch against my pets.
I'm farming the area for 2 hours straight to get that rare snake, but nothing. I guess i had luck with the spiders tho.

after 6 hours i finally found one. stupidly i had a whole lineup of damaged critters, so the snake ended up killing my pets. That was my only defeat that day. Searched for another 2 hours, couldn't find it again. Going to hang myself now.
First pet battle in this zone yielded a rare Rat Snake. No such luck with the 2 spiders the area - still stuck with greens.
To those who are looking for a rare one to complete their collection, like I was, my best tip for you is to just to encage every pet you see, they are much more common to find as secondary pet than a invidual spawn.
It took me about 40 mins to find P/S rare, after I accidentally killed the first one OTLNot many spawn, and they are scattered all around. After two days of hunting, I finally found one as a secondary pet to a Dusk Spiderling, of which there are many. They show up when battling most other pets in the zone (Mice, spiderlings, roaches, etc.), so just engage everything you see.
IMHO- Clearly one of the most difficult battle pets to find in rare form in Duskwood! Not an abundance available to search among and have yet to find a rare after hours of searching on two different realms. {update}-Finally found a rare after two days, two realms, and many hours. He was the secondary pet to a mouse.
Re:- your comments below Contre about the rogue, PVP servers stink as I was mid battle with a rare very difficult to get qiraji hatchling and a horde killed me and thus my pet was gone. none fair in pvp :(
update: not even kidding, finally found another rare and I got knocked out of the fight by a rogue. Pet despawned. FML
I need a rare rat snake and I need a rare skunk. I fly into Duskwood and I see a skunk. First fight of the night. And the add? A rare rat snake. So I'm like, "awesome!" and I forfeit the match to grab my turnip. While I'm doing that, a worg comes in and kills the skunk in front of me. So instead of farming rare pets tonight, I'm killing every damn worg in the zone.
update: not even kidding, finally found another rare and I got knocked out of the fight by a rogue. Pet despawned. FML
So I have been farming Duskwood for about an hour and have seen a far Share of Rat Snake's but no luck in a rare. I did however manage to snag a Green for the time being as I am working towards a total rare collection. Its 9:30 Server atm so Ill keep farming for bit longer and keep you posted on my progress.
Update:
After killing about another 20 pets I found a Rare Rat Snake at 10:07 Server time at coordinates 48.3 X 61.9
Looking for a rare and finding its hard to find any at all, nevermind a rare. I have only seen 2 as the primary pet in over an hour of looking. Found a couple as the secondary and all were common or poor. Will have to keep looking.
Update: Found a bunch as primary and secondary at Rotting Orchard, but still no rares there.
2nd update: Found lots more, including my rare, at night (approx 10-11pm ST).
Found out something this evening I was farming the widow spiderling and then they disappeared and suddenly duskwood was full of the Rat Snakes, so i am taking it that they spawn after the widow spiderling go.
Zone was empty but decided to try to get a rare widow/dusk spiderling and see if that would trigger a spawn. Got a rare rat snake as a second with a dusk spider at about 1am server.
I found some in the "Tranquil garden cemetery" and in "Rolands Doom".

I found two after about 10 minutes searching, both at Yorgen Farmstead. Luckily, the second was a rare.
Found at 11.45 am server at 49.75
Found one right next to the Inn in Darkshire.
Found several spawns of them in the Vul'gol Ogre Mound of Duskwood.
Had trouble finding them elswhere while flying about so I tried to trigger it as a secondary combatant, though I saw none in seven battles or so.
