10 Years of WarcraftPets: April Fool's Retrospective

April 01, 2017
WarcraftPets will be celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, and to help commemorate the occasion we asked the community to help decide the best and worst WarcraftPets April Fool's joke.

The results are in! Counting down from least popular to most popular, here's a list of our Top WarcraftPets April Fool's gags, as determined by you!

#8. Epic Pet Battle Stats
Epic Pet Battle Stats
Coming in at number eight is our take on Epic Pet Battle Stats.

Prior to Legion, developers were playing around with the idea of epic quality pets. Battlestones to upgrade your pets to epic even made a brief appearance during the Legion Alpha.

Although it was eventually decided that epic quality pets would not be included in Legion's release, we took the idea of upgrading your pets and added a twist: new and randomized stats.

Ten different stats, all randomly assigned to your pet upon upgrading it to epic. Some qualities beneficial, but most... not so much.

#7. Battle Pet Evolution
Battle Pet Evolution
Ranked at number seven is Battle Pet Evolution.

Pet Battles is commonly referred to the "Pokémon of WoW", as it has many similar elements to the Japanese franchise.

There are a few notable differences, however. One of the most glaring distinctions is the ability for Pokémon to evolve and change in appearance, a skill that battle pets in WoW lack. But what if our companions could change and evolve?

For this April Fool's we imagined some of the more obvious battle pet evolutions, as well as some that might not be as practical. Puftbomination seems more like the type that would battle against you, rather than for you...

#6. Trick Out your Vanity Pets
Trick Out your Vanity Pets
Trick Out your Vanity Pets comes in at number six.

During the Mists of Pandaria Beta, we "discovered" a new fun feature of Pet Battles. Gear, pets and even mounts for your pets!

The requirements for these vanity items for your pets were astronomically high for the time period. Being a brand new activity in MoP, achieving thousands of Pet Battle wins seemed like a lofty goal.

Interestingly enough, portions of this April Fool's made it into the game some way or another. Dress up your Perky Pug with a "Dapper Gentleman" Costume, and the Feline Familiar will mount up on a broom to follow players on their adventures.

And who knows? As impractical as it is, maybe the idea of pets for your battle pets will also find its way into the game one day.

#5. Weighted Companion Cube
Weighted Companion Cube
This was a triumph... for the Weighted Companion Cube, at least, voted as a respectable number five.

Paying homage to the game Portal, we created a special pet profile page and an FAQ page with its own silliness just for the Weighted Companion Cube.

It's the pet that many will always want, but will never have. Why? Because...

The cake is a lie.
The cake is a lie.
The cake is a lie.

#4. Companion Loyalty
Companion Loyalty
Did we fool you with this one? Companion Loyalty is ranked number four.

Borrowing from an old-school Hunter pet mechanic, we created the same loyalty concept but for companion pets.

Feed, hug, pet and play with your pets to help them earn loyalty. Companions could lose loyalty in addition to gaining, so managing a large collection required lots of time and attention.

Players had to maintain a certain amount of friendship with their pets or else the unthinkable would happen — your pets would run away!

#3. Everyone Poops... Even Pets
Everyone Poops... Even Pets
Everyone Poops... Even Pets was voted number three in our retrospective.

Realism doesn't exactly play a large part in WoW. It is, afterall, a game of fiction and fantasy.

But that didn't stop us from coming up with a disgustingly cute idea: companion pets that defecate.

Seven years later and we have our first true pooping pet — Trashy. Thankfully, we don't have to clean up after him. His droppings aren't exactly small!

#2. Summon Multiple Pets
Summon Multiple Pets
Coming in at number two, Summon Multiple Pets, But With A Catch...

Many collectors have long dreamed of the ability to have more than one pet summoned at a time. But with the possible technical and graphical constraints on the game, it's an unlikely feature.

So for this April Fool's, we came up with a solution to lighten the load on servers — "Variable Model Rendering" or VMR.

Graphical settings as determined by the server, based on its changing load. The more players that have multiple pets out, the more VMR is utilized.

This did have some interesting side effects on the looks of certain pets though.

And the overwhelming winner with the most votes by far goes to...

#1. Bottom 10 Pets
Bottom 10 Pets
Coming in at number one, your most favorite WarcraftPets April Fool's joke to date, the crème de la crème, it's.... WarcraftPets' Bottom 10 Pets!

It's no wonder why the majority of our community would choose this as their favorite. This was the first April Fool's joke to ever appear on WarcraftPets, way back in 2008.

It looks like many haven't forgotten about how innovative and witty it was. And who doesn't love cockroaches? Well, this list is full of them!

A normal Top 10 list is so overdone and boring. But a Bottom 10 list? HA! It's so refreshing and inspiring... and FUNNY! I mean, come on... who could possibly think any of those other jokes are better?

So much charm and hilarity, this brilliant gag still makes us laugh out loud 9 years later, and it definitely remains number one in our collective hearts... right?

April Fools!

APRIL FOOLS! In actuality, the Bottom 10 Pets list got zero votes and is ranked dead-last. Yep, not even a pity vote. The REAL #1 is...

Drum roll please...

#1. Pet Breeding!
Pet Breeding
Battle Pet Breeding took first place by a landslide.

Early on in Pet Battles, there was talk of the possibility of allowing players to breed their battle pets. It was even discovered that there are genders assigned to every pet.

We had to wonder, though, what kind of crazy combinations would collectors come up with.

Thanks to Drrum's expertly crafted images that combined two pets into wild and humorous mutations, this April Fool's was one of our most creative.

Pet breeding never made it into the game in any shape or form, however there was a small nod to this particular joke in the form of the pet ability Carpnado.

Thank You
We hope you enjoyed this small walk down memory lane. Looking back at our past gags, we can only hope to continue outdoing ourselves in future April Fool's.

We'd like to thank everyone who voted for their favorite WarcraftPets April Fool's joke. Your participation helped make this fun retrospection happen!

A big thank you to all of our members for your continued contribution and support. We are honored to have such a wonderful community.

As we celebrate 10 years of WarcraftPets, we look forward to many more years of pet collecting, Pet Battles, and fun-filled April Fool's!

April 06, 2017
WarcraftPets Turns 10, celebrating ten great years!
It's been 10 years since WarcraftPets first came online. (Wow... has it really been that long?)

That's 10 years of collection tracking, pet-related news, and fostering an amazing community made up of remarkable pet collectors like you!

Major Milestones
Throughout the past decade, there have been some major milestones for WarcraftPets. Here are just a few of the notable events that occurred over the past 10 years.

Thank YOU for 10 Amazing Years!
We've said it before, but we can never say it enough: thank you, our site members and fans, once again for supporting our site with your regular visits. We'd especially like to thank our Site MVPSite MVPs for their ongoing contributions to the site.

I never imagined WarcraftPets would get as big as it did all those years ago when I coded it from scratch. But in the end, all I created were the bones of this site — it's all of you who supply its lifeblood. Thanks for sticking with us for so long.

An Extra Special Thanks
While I may have created this site a decade ago, it wouldn't exist today without the help of two very important volunteers — Quintessence and Weena. Both have spent countless hours building and adding content to WarcraftPets over the years. Their tireless efforts and devoted contributions cannot be understated.

I encourage you to offer them your heartfelt thanks and appreciation in the comments below. Without their work, this site probably wouldn't have endured for five years, let alone ten. Their time and talents have been instrumental to WarcraftPets' success.

Happy Collecting!

Now it's your turn — join in the celebration! The next time you log into WoW, take out your favorite pet and give it a /cheer on our behalf!

May your travels through the World of Warcraft continue to be filled with exciting pet battles and lovable companions. Meanwhile, our site will continue to inspire, inform and entertain you as you build the ultimate pet collection.

Patch 7.2.5 PTR: 3 New Pets and Deadmines Pet Battle Dungeon

April 16, 2017
UPDATE: In the most recent PTR build, the Deadmines Pet Battle Dungeon pet rewards are now purchasable from the NPC that sends players into the scenario. They are no longer an achievement reward or bag drops.

The PTR was recently updated to 7.2.5, and there are three new pets plus a new Pet Battle Dungeon — Deadmines! [source]

Pet Reaper 50, Pocket Cannon, Tricorne

Three new Deadmines-themed pets are coming in 7.2.5 (pictured above):

All 7.2.5 Datamined Pets

Learn more about this new Pet Battle Dungeon below!

Pet Battle Dungeon: Deadmines
The mystery of the Shadowy Figure continues as we travel from Wailing Caverns to Deadmines in 7.2.5.

Note that the following content is previewed from the PTR and as such is subject to change.

Level 110 players that completed Wailing Critters will be offered a new quest from Breanni in Dalaran (Broken Isles).

Despite adventurers clearing out Deadmines not just once, but twice, there are rumors of suspicious happenings going on inside. Breanni sends you to Westfall to meet up with an old friend, Marcus "Bagman" Brown, who requests you investigate the dungeon.

Similar to the Wailing Caverns Pet Battle Dungeon, the Deadmines scenario has 7 stages. However, unlike its predecessor, Deadmines only has a total of 9 different enemy encounters.

Klutz's Battle Rate, Klutz's Battle Monkey, Klutz's Battle Bird

All primary enemy pets have either the Elite or Boss passive, and backline pets are common quality crabs, rats, and parrots.

  • Stage 1: What Is All This Junk?
Defeat Junk Reaper 50 - A single pet fight against an epic level 25 Mechanical pet
  • Unfortunate Defias
    Stage 2: Terrible Tunnel
Defeat Unfortunate Defias (pictured right) and Angry Geode - Both uncommon level 25 pets accompanied by common quality backline pets
  • Stage 3: Worst. Guard. Ever.
Defeat Mining Monkey - A rare level 25 Beast, plus two common backline pets
  • Stage 4: Outta My Way. You Oaf!
Defeat "Captain" Klutz - A single pet fight against an epic level 25 Humanoid
  • Stage 5: Cannon Crazy
Defeat Klutz's Battle Rat, Klutz's Battle Monkey, Klutz's Battle Bird (all pictured above) - All uncommon level 25 pets accompanied by common quality backline pets
  • Stage 6: Shadowy Figure
Confront the Shadowy Figure (Who could this be?!)
  • Stage 7: The Soup's Gone Bad!
Defeat Cookie's Leftovers - A single pet fight against a legendary level 25 Magic pet

Completing the one-time, Normal Deadmines Pet Battle Dungeon quest rewards an Ultimate Battle-Training Stone plus the ability, Manapoof Link: Westfall. Speak with the NPC next to Breanni in Dalaran and it will provide a direct teleport to Deadmines.

The Challenge version of the dungeon is also unlocked upon completion of Normal mode. It requires at least 15 level 25 pets, and pets cannot be healed or revived while inside the Challenge scenario.

Pet Battle Challenge: Deadmines is a weekly, account-wide quest that rewards 1 Old Bottle Cap which can be exchanged with Marcus "Bagman" Brown for the new Deadmines-themed pets.

Are you looking forward to the next Pet Battle Dungeon? Who do you think the Shadowy Figure is? We can't wait to unravel this mystery!

Patch 7.2.5 PTR: Deadmines Pet Battle Challenge Dungeon Update

April 19, 2017
We recently covered the upcoming Deadmines Pet Battle Dungeon, however there was a fairly significant change in the latest 7.2.5 PTR build.

New Pets, New Currency
Previously, the pet rewards from this scenario were awarded from a related achievement and as drops from the Challenge reward bag. This has since changed.

In the most recent PTR update, the three new Deadmines-themed pets are now instead purchasable from the NPC that sends you into the dungeon.

Deadmines Challenge Dungeon reward - Old Bottle Cap
Players must earn a new currency, Old Bottle Cap, in order to buy these pets.

The account-wide Pet Battle Challenge: Deadmines weekly quest awards one Cap each week (pictured above).

Marcus Bagman Brown's wares
The pets are Bind on Pick Up and are not cageable, so players must complete the Challenge version of Deadmines Pet Battle Dungeon at least 6 times to collect all three pets.

In addition to selling these pets, Marcus "Bagman" Brown also sells Mr. Smite's Supplies (pictured right). This bag contains Pet Charms and other Pet Battle supplies, but no new pet drops.

What do you think of this change? Do you prefer buying the pets, or do you find RNG more exciting?

Snaplasher — Pet of the Month: April 2017

April 26, 2017
Snaplasher - Pet of the Month April 2017

We're snapping into spring with a pet from the latest installment of Raiding With Leashes — it's the Snaplasher!

Collecting the Snaplasher
Snaplasher - first color
The Snaplasher is a battle pet that drops from the Freya encounter in the Ulduar raid instance. The pet can come from normal or hardmode.

If you're looking to collect only this pet, it's possible to skip the first 7 Ulduar bosses. However, it should be noted that 4 of the first 7 bosses can drop other battle pets.

To skip straight to Freya, interact with the Ulduar Teleporter that's located in the staging area as you enter the raid. Select "Teleport to the Ulduar Tram." and it will teleport you deeper into the raid.

Snaplasher - second color
Instead of taking the tram to Mimiron's area, head down the hallway toward where the majority of the Keepers reside. You can either kill or avoid Auriaya before heading to The Conservatory of Life.

Max level players should have no problem defeating Freya on any difficulty. Level-appropriate players will want to bring some friends.

If you want to avoid hardmode, you'll need to defeat Elder Stonebark, Elder Ironbranch, and Elder Brightleaf located in The Conservatory of Life. Each Elder adds health and different abilities to Freya's encounter.

Collecting the Snaplasher awards progress toward Raiding with Leashes IV: Wrath of the Lick King.

This pet is a fun little flower that only comes in one breed, however it has two different colors and can spawn in as either when summoned. It's the perfect springtime companion!

Battling with the Snaplasher
The Snaplasher is an attractive little pet with a lot of healing, but a slightly tricky moveset to use.

The first ability it gets, the multi-hitting Lash, is the only one without a cooldown. All its other moves are fairly complex, as well.

Snaplasher using Solar Beam
Sharing the first slot is Solar Beam (pictured above), which will hit twice in Sunlight. Unfortunately the Snaplasher doesn't have an ability which causes Sunlight, so you'll need to find a partner for the Snaplasher to really shine — pun intended.

The Snaplasher's third slot moves are both delay bomb effects. Stun Seed and Entangling Roots both deal the same amount of damage, but the cooldown on Roots is much shorter. Also, though this may go without saying, the Stun will stun and the Roots will root, which may affect your choice in the field, too.

The middle slot is where the Snaplasher gets its longevity. Leech Seed is a damaging DoT with a reflexive heal which is relatively no fuss. Plant will build up a heal each turn while it's active (your Snaplasher can't go to the back row for this, unfortunately). When you use the ability again, Plant heals. It's like a game of chicken — do you want to play it safe and heal this turn, or go for the gusto and hope your pet won't be killed before you can use it next turn?

The Snaplasher is a fun, quirky pet which is right at home this spring.

Battling Discussion on the Snaplasher

Pet of the Month is co-written by Liopleurodon, an experienced pet battler and long-time WoW player. She maintains her own Pet Battle blog and is a Pet Battle columnist on the fansite Blizzard Watch.
