I got a rare as the second pet to a snowy owl. I wanted to go for the owl... but I went for the chick instead.

I don't know if this is a fluke or not, but I ended up having this as the only pet against me in the fight. It made it incredibly easy to catch one. You can use low-level pets to catch one, about 3 lvl 10s is more than enough. I hope blizz doesn't change this.
